New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajinder Sachar on Monday met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and urged her not to go ahead with privatisation of the sector alleging it will severely hit the common man.
Sachar, who had written a letter to Dikshit earlier opposing the move, told her that public-private partnership for water distribution will have an "adverse" impact on the poor people.
Sachar is a patron of the Water Privatisation-Commercialisation Resistance Committee (WPCRC) which has been opposing government`s decision to privatise water supply.
Officials said the Chief Minister, who is chairperson of Delhi Jal Board, assured Sachar that his concerns will be addressed and directed DJB officials to brief him about the entire PPP model for water sector.
After years of dilly-dallying, Delhi government had in August last year approved a pilot project to involve private entities in distribution of water in command areas of Malviya Nagar, Vasant Vihar and Nangloi underground reservoirs and water treatment plants.
The government said the private entities would rationalise the water distribution network and ensure supply of water to consumers round-the-clock.
Officials said the private sector would be involved in water distribution, management and maintenance of DJB`s infrastructure in Malviya Nagar, Vasant Vihar and Nangloi and they will be paid a fee for their services.
Dikshit had for quite some time been indicating about reforms in water sector on the lines of reform in the power sector.
