New Delhi: Convicted Congress leader Rasheed Masood was on Tuesday granted three months interim bail by the Delhi High Court on medical ground.
Justice J R Midha granted the bail to Masood and also to former IPS officer Gurdayal Singh on the same medical ground.
Masood, was the first MP to lose his seat after Supreme Court struck down a provision in the electoral law that protected a convicted lawmaker from disqualification on the ground of pendency of appeal in higher courts.
The court asked both of them to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each.
Masood, who is undergoing four years` imprisonment in a corruption case and other offences, has also challenged his conviction in the High Court, which is yet to be decided.
The court had earlier asked Jail Superintendent to file the medical records of the accused who claims to be a heart and diabetes patient.
Masood`s counsel told the court that his client is a heart and diabetic patient. "He has to take 15-18 medicines in a day and four insulin injections," the lawyer said.
It was argued that Masood has been facing trial in the case for the last 17 years and during that time he remained on bail and never disobeyed the bail conditions.
On September 19, 66-year-old Masood was held guilty by a trial court for fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates from across the country to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura medical colleges from the Central pool.
Subsequently on October 1, he was awarded four-year jail term and since then he has been lodged in Tihar jail.
Masood was the minister of health in the 11-month VP Singh government between 1990 and 1991.
