New Delhi: Induction of 11,000 new buses,
better monitoring of public vehicles through smart card,
licenses and driver badges are some of the steps being taken
by the Delhi Government to streamline transport system during
the Commonwealth Games in the city in October.

This was stated by J S Sindhu, Joint Commissioner in the
Delhi transport Department at the CII conference being
organised here.
Emphasizing on the less road space in Delhi, he said
while the road length in the capital has grown by 3.7 per cent
over the last 40 years, the number of vehicles has increased
26 times.

"Out of the 60 lakh vehicles plying in the city, 90 per
cent are privately owned which has led to congestion of
roads," he added.

Noor Mohammed, member secretary of NCR Planning Board,
said the Board has chalked out a detailed integrated transport
plan estimating Rs 1,76,000 crores to connect the region with
the neighbouring areas which could act as counter magnets for
the capital.
"The plan includes integrating different modes of
transport, promotion of walkability and cycling and their
integration with the transport system besides opening up of
the less accessible areas are some of the key elements of the
plan," he said.

The fund to be spent till 2031 will have to be raised
through innovative resource mobilisation, he added.
