Tribal body submits report to President

Tribes on Friday presented its fourth report for the year 2008-09
to President Pratibha Patil.

The report submitted by NCST Vice Chairperson Maurice
Kujur had details of the work carried out by the Commission in
2008-09 as well as the recommendations it made in this period
to uplift the status of the scheduled tribes in the country.

The Commission, which was constituted in 2004, makes
recommendations regarding measures that should be taken by the
Centre or any state government for effective implementation of
measures for the protection, welfare and socio-economic
development of STs.

As per the constitutional provisions, the report of the
Commission has to be laid in both Houses of Parliament along
with a memorandum explaining the action taken or proposed to
be taken on the recommendations relating to the Union
government.

Similar action has also to be taken while laying the
report in the legislative assembly of the state concerned, in
relation to the recommendations concerning the state.
