UGC to keep in abeyance regulation for affiliation of colleges

In view of an interim order passed by the Supreme Court, UGC has kept in abeyance the regulation for affiliation of colleges offering technical education by universities.

New Delhi: In view of an interim order passed by the Supreme Court, University Grants Commission (UGC) has kept in abeyance the regulation for affiliation of colleges offering technical education by universities.

At its full commission meeting, UGC decided to keep the UGC (Affiliation of Colleges offering Technical Education by Universities) Regulation, 2014 in abeyance till the final outcome of the decision of the Supreme Court, officials said.
The commission also informed the vice chancellors of various universities last week of its decision.

In its interim order on April 17, the apex court had allowed AICTE to have regulatory control over technical educational institutions in the country for the 2014-15 academic year.

It had withdrawn such powers from AICTE last year, saying that colleges affiliated to any university do not come under AICTE purview.
Following its ruling, UGC had earlier this year come up with the regulation to take over control of technical education in the country.

The interim order on April 17 came on a petition of the Odisha Technical Colleges` Association (OTCA).
