New Delhi: A 'whistle-blower' credited with several sting operations against alleged corrupt policemen was shot and injured by bike-borne assailants here while his pet dog was killed as it tried to save him in the attack.

Chetan Prakash Sharma suffered a bullet injury in his hand and is said to be out of danger. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accompanied by Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain and AAP MLA Somnath Bharti visited him here this morning and assured him of security and fair trial in the case.

Sharma has helped the Anti Corruption Branch in identifying many alleged corrupt policemen through his sting operations in the last 10 years.

The attack on Sharma took place last night in West Delhi's Rajapuri around 10:30 PM when he was walking his dog in front of his house after having dinner.

"Two bike-borne men reached the spot and suddenly opened fire on him. His German Shepherd dog instantly jumped on the attackers to save his master, sustaining at least three bullets in the incident dying on the spot. Sharma sustained a bullet injury in his hand while the attackers fled," said a senior police official.

Someone made a PCR call at around 11 PM after which Sharma was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital for treatment.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code including attempt to murder against unknown persons and have taken up investigation.

Sharma has expressed suspicion over some people in his statement to the police.

"We are checking the CCTV footage of the area to identify the attackers and further investigations are on," the official said.
