Facing inquiry, IGNOU VC goes on leave

IGNOU vice-chancellor M Aslam, facing criticism over some of his decisions, on Friday went on leave pending the outcome of an inquiry committee.

New Delhi: IGNOU vice-chancellor M Aslam, facing criticism over some of his decisions, on Friday went on leave pending the outcome of an inquiry committee.

"The VC has gone on leave from this afternoon and pro-VC Professor Nageshwar Rao has taken over for the next one month," a varsity official said.

The HRD Ministry has set up a committee under Gujarat University VC Syed Bari last month to review the functioning of IGNOU and look into the allegations against Aslam.

IGNOU had got a written communication in this regard on November 18. Aslam decided to proceed on leave today to ensure an "unbiased" probe, the official said.

He had come under attack for his decisions, especially to discontinue the community college scheme that left thousands of students including soldiers, airmen and sailors without certificates and diplomas.

He is also accused of administrative irregularities and wrongdoings in appointment of faculties.

The parliamentary panel on HRD too had earlier this year recommended an inquiry into the appointment of Aslam, his powers and decisions taken by him, besides the controversial issue of closure of community colleges.
