BBSM to agitate against English as medium of instruction

A forum supporting Konkani and Marathi as medium of instruction in elementary education on Tuesday announced statewide protest from Friday against Goa government's decision to continue giving grants to English medium schools.

Panaji: A forum supporting Konkani and Marathi as medium of instruction in elementary education on Tuesday announced statewide protest from Friday against Goa government's decision to continue giving grants to English medium schools.

"We will not allow government to de-nationalise Goa. We won't allow grants to be continued to English medium schools during the next academic year," Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) leader Subhash Velingkar told a press conference.

He said that BBSM plans to organise a massive protest rally on August 7 in Panaji city as a show of strength in support of Indian languages as medium of education.

"We don't mind governments giving grants to schools in any Indian language," he said.

Parents pressing for English as medium of education had recently protested on the streets under the banner of the Forum of Right to Children's Education (FORCE).

Several buses were stoned and traffic was brought to a standstill due to the agitation.

BBSM has also demanded that all those involved in the FORCE agitation should be arrested by the police.

"The police knows who were involved in chaos on the road. They should be arrested," Velingkar said.
