Panaji: Police are on a lookout for a 34-
year-old Goa resident, who allegedly attempted to rape a
Russian tourist in coastal village of Colva, 35 kms from here.
The accused, John Fernandes, offered the 25-year-old
Russian lift back to her hotel last night in his car and tried
to rape her, according to the police complaint.
Fernandes met the victim at a local beach shack last
night. The victim, along with another Russian girl, was dining
at a beach shack at Colva when they met the accused who
offered them to drop at their hotels, police said.
One of them was staying at a hotel in Colva, while the
other girl had checked in at Benaulim village, a few
kilometers away from the beach, they said.
Police said the accused, after dropping the first
girl, took the victim to an isolated spot and tried to rape
her. The girl, however, managed to escape and lodged a police
complaint this afternoon.
"We are on a lookout for him (Fernandes)," a senior
police officer said.
The accused had unsuccessfully contested the last
Assembly election from Benaulim constituency against NCP
legislator Fransisco Pacheco, who is currently Tourism
Minister.
