Ahmedabad: At least 2,000 villages in the
state are facing acute shortage of drinking water as
government authorities have failed to make arrangements for
regular supply of water, Maha Gujarat Janata Party president
Gordhan Zadafia said here.
According to him, hundreds of villages in Saurashtra
are getting drinking water once a week through tankers but the
authorities have failed to provide Narmada water through
canals.
"The state government has completely failed to build
canals in Saurashtra and Kutch, which are water scarce areas,"
Zadafia said, adding that only 27 per cent canal network has
been built so far while it would take at least 10 years to
finish remaining canal network in the command area of Narmada
project.
He added his party would launch a `yatra` in the
villages of Saurashtra in order to highlight the failure of
the authorities.
Zadafia also said that Gujarat has seen good growth in
agriculture because of good rainfall during the last couple of
years but if Narmada water is provided, farmers can benefit
from growing three crops a year.
