Ahmedabad: The Bar Council of Gujarat has enrolled retired IPS officer Rahul Sharma, who took on the Gujarat government over the 2002 communal riots, as an advocate.
"We enrolled retired IPS officer Rahul Sharma as an advocate with the Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG) on April 12," BCG member Anil Kella said here.
"We called him on Sunday and examined some documents regarding a pending departmental inquiry against him. After examining it (departmental inquiry documents) throughly, he has been enrolled," Kella said.
The 1992 batch IPS officer Rahul Sharma had taken on the then Gujarat government headed by Narendra Modi over the 2002 communal riots and provided crucial case related details to a probe panel headed by retired Justice G T Nanavati.
Sharma had filed an application to enrol with the Bar Council of Gujarat to start his legal practice on March 14.
He had sought retirement from police service in November last year, which was accepted by the Gujarat home department in February this year.
After his wife's death in 2013, Sharma had also sought a transfer either to Gandhinagar or Ahmedabad, but the state government had denied it.
Sharma had submitted a compact disc (CD) with call data records of important Gujarat state functionaries and leaders of right-wing groups like Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, which also described movements of those leaders during crucial periods of the 2002 riots, before the Justice Nanavati Commission.
The call records were compiled by Sharma during the investigation of Naroda Patiya, Naroda Gam and Gulbarg Society riots cases.
