9:00 pm: Gujarat BJP leaders today conveyed the state BJP legislature party`s decision to elect Anandi Patel as its new leader to Governor Kamla Beniwal, and requested her that Patel be sworn in as the new Chief Minister. State BJP president RC Faldu, BJP general secretary Amit Shah and other leaders met the Governor.

6:40 pm Modi tweets extending best wishes to Anandiben Patel on becoming Gujarat`s first women CM.

5:45 pm: Narendra Modi fought back tears again as he wished Gujarat to "surge ahead" after his departure from the state and sought forgiveness if he had done "anything wrong". Addressing members of Gujarat assembly, he said, "Forgive me if I have done anything wrong. This is my fourth term as chief minister. As I am going now and don`t know when I will come back here, I want you to forgive me if you have felt that I was not up to the mark in my work or there was any shortcoming in my conduct." - PTI

4:05 pm: Anandiben Patel elected leader of Gujarat BJP Legislature Party. Known to be close aide of Modi she is all set to be the new Chief Minister of Gujarat. She would be administered oath of office by the Governor on May 22.

1:45 pm: JD(U) leader KC Tyagi hit back at Modi for inviting Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif for the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 26. Tyagi said during poll campaign Modi said India won`t engage in a dialogue with Pakistan until Islamabad acts against terror groups emanating from its soil, then why he is inviting Sharif for the ceremony.

Sharif has been invited to attend Narendra Modi`s swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 26.

According to reports, the pakistan Prime Minister will be among 3,000 dignitaries who have ben invited to attend the function. Besides Pakistan Prime Minister, the heads of governments of the SAARC members countries have also been invited to attend the function.

9:40 am: Hailing Modi`s appointment as the Prime Minister of India, BJP leader Vitthalbhai Hansrajbhai Radadiya said that the Gujarat will prosper and develop more with the BJP strongman attaining the top post.

Vitthal is infamous for pulling a gun at a toll booth attendant. He quit the Congress and joined the BJP in February this year.

9:00 am: BJP leader OM Mathur confirms that Narendra Modi will resign today as Gujarat Chief Minsiter and party MLAs will hold a meeting at 4 pm and elect the new CM.

President appoints Modi as the PM

After his address, he went to meet President Pranab Mukherjee. This was after a delegation of 15 members of NDA, led by BJP president Rajnath Singh had called on the President and handed over a letter stating that Modi has been elected as leader of BJP parliamentary party.

Later a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said - "Shri Narendra Modi, leader of the BJP parliamentary party, called on the President at 1515 hours today. As Shri Narendra Modi has been elected as BJP parliamentary party and BJP has the majority in the House of the people, the President appointed Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India and requested him to advise the names of others to be appointed members of the Council of Ministers,” PTI reported.

Sad on quitting as MLA: Modi

Modi on Tuesday said that he was sad on quitting as MLA but the people of Maninagar were happy that he had become the Prime Minister of India.

He posted on the micro-blogging site Twitter - I am sad on quitting as MLA but people of Maninagar are happy. Infact, when I won in 2012 they said PM PM. Their affection is touching.”
