Protest over civic facilities turns violent on I-Day in Gujarat

A deputy superintendent of police was injured in the stone-pelting while at least 15 people were detained after protesters clashed with police at Thasra in Kheda district during the flag-hoisting ceremony on Friday.

Anand: A deputy superintendent of police was injured in the stone-pelting while at least 15 people were detained after protesters clashed with police at Thasra in Kheda district during the flag-hoisting ceremony on Friday.

Deputy Superintendent of police H A Rathod, Nadiad division, said what started with slogans demanding better civic amenities turned violent as the people began to throw stones at the mamlatdar (tehsil officer) office.

Rathod himself was injured in the stone-pelting, and finally the police had to lathi-charge and lob nine teargas shells to disperse the mob, he said.

The protest was about long-unfulfilled demands regarding sanitation, roads and drinking water facilities, he said.

Agitators also blocked the Godhra-Nadiad road, he said, adding that the process of filing FIRs against 15 detained persons was underway.
