Ahmedabad: At least ten people were injured and several shops were set on fire in clashes between two groups in Hansot village of Bharuch district today, the police said.
To control the situation, a large number of local police as well as State Reserve Police (SRP) forces have been deployed in Hansot as well as the adjoining Ambeta village. The police also fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the mob.

However, the situation is now under control, police said.

"At present, the situation is tense but under control. During afternoon, mobs fought after a minor scuffle between two groups in Ambeta village during Makar Sankranti celebrations today," Bharuch Superintendent of Police (SP) Bipin Ahire said.

"This incident sparked tension among two communities in Ambeta and Hansot. Mobs from both communities started pelting stones and we also learned that the mobs also burned down eight to ten shops. Around ten people were injured in these clashes," Ahire said.

The injured were admitted to local hospitals in Hansot and Bharuch, police said.

It all began after a boy from the minority community was thrashed in Ambeta village for catching kite today morning. Later, a large number of locals from both communities engaged in violent clashes with sharp weapons, he said.

From Ambeta village, clashes spread to the nearby Hansot village.
