Seven Haryana STF men detained in extortion case

Seven personnel of Haryana Special Task Force (STF) were on Monday detained by police and their team leader questioned in connection with an alleged extortion case.

Panipat: Seven personnel of Haryana
Special Task Force (STF) were on Monday detained by police and
their team leader questioned in connection with an alleged
extortion case.

This follows a police complaint on Saturday by B K
Malhotra, a jeweller, and Rajat Sharma, who works
as a stock broker, that unidentified armed men had taken Rs
6 lakh as extortion money from them, police said.

The seven STF members, including two Assistant
Sub-Inspectors, have been detained for questioning in
connection with the case, Director General Police R S Balal
said.

The 15-member STF has been directed to remain
"non-operational", pending an inquiry by Superintendent of
Police, Panipat, Rajender Singh, the DGP said.

"We saw the CCTV footage of the jewellery shop and our
staff recognised that one of the men was an STF constable as
he was earlier posted with Panipat STF," SP Rajender Singh
said.

ASP Ashok Sheoran, who was the team leader, was also
quizzed yesterday, police said.

A case under Section 97 (robbery, or dacoity, with
attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of IPC and Section
25/54/59 of Arms Act (for possessing illegal weapons) has been
filed against unidentified persons.

Singh said a five-member team has been formed to probe
the case.

The STF was formed to deal with Naxalism, terrorism,
narcotics smuggling and other serious crimes.
