Shimla: The extended deadline for painting the roofs of the houses here expired today and the defaulters, who failed to abide by the directives of the High Court, would face penal action, Deputy Mayor, Shimla Municipal Corporation, Takinder Panwar said.

Most of the owners or occupants have complied with the order of the High Court but about 2,000 houses, mostly government buildings have not got the roofs painted, he said.

There is a mandatory provision in Shimla Municipal Corporation Act for getting the roofs of houses painted after every three years and the Corporation had directed all the house owners to get the roofs of their houses painted "red or green" by December 31, 2014.

Due to snowfall, rains and bad weather, a large number of house owners could not get the roofs painted and the Corporation had to extend the deadline upto April 30, 2015, which expired today, he said.

The Corporation would submit the list of defaulters to the High Court and take action against the defaulters as per the directions of the HC.

There is provision of imposing a fine upto Rs 50,000 on defaulters but we have asked the commissioner to be lenient and liberal, Panwar said.

He said the Corporation has prepared a module for providing free WiFi for state capital Shimla and it would be included in the mega plan for including Shimla among 100 smart cities. PTI
