Himachal decides to form road accident panel

Himachal Pradesh government on Wednesday decided to constitute road accident committees at sub-division level to expeditiously inquire into accidents and deliver necessary relief without loss of time.

A cabinet meeting here presided over by Chief Minister
Prem Kumar Dhumal decided to set up the "permanent road
accident committees" under the chairmanship of Sub-Divisional
Magistrate (SDM) with assistant engineer (mechanical) and
inspector/sub-inspector of police as members, an official
release said.

These committees will conduct inquiries into accidents
and submit reports to concerned regional transport officer
(RTO) within a fortnight. The RTO will than take action as
envisioned in the central motor vehicle Act, 1988.

The formation of committees is part of the "Himachal
Pradesh in-depth study of road accident scheme, 2009" with a
view to expeditiously find out the causes of the road
accidents and deliver necessary relief to the victims.

According to official reports more than 900 people
lost their lives in accidents in the state in 2009.
