Quito: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook parts of Ecuador early Saturday, though there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. 

Ecuador`s Geophysical Institute said the quake occurred at 01:26 am (0626 GMT) at a depth of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) off the Ecuadorian coast.

The quake was felt in the capital Quito and the coastal city Esmeraldas near Colombia.

Despite the seismic event`s strength, authorities said there was no immediate sign of damage.
