Varanasi: In a shocking incident, an assistant professor in prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU) allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.

Swati Pandey, who had recently joined the History Department, was reportedly depressed after her engagement was called off on Sunday, Ajit Mishra, SHO of Bhelupur police station, said. Her engagement was scheduled for next month.

In a "suicide note", Swati said she was taking the extreme step as her engagement, scheduled for May 9, was cancelled, the SHO said.

The BHU's assistant professor "committed suicide" in her house in Janki Nagar Colony. Her body was found on Monday morning by her family members.

The body has been sent for postmortem and an FIR registered in the case.
