BJP 'not sincere' on black money issue: Congress

The Congress Party on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of not being 'sincere' in getting black money illegally stashed abroad, adding that it would support the government's efforts if steps are to be taken in that direction.

New Delhi: The Congress Party on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of not being 'sincere' in getting black money illegally stashed abroad, adding that it would support the government's efforts if steps are to be taken in that direction.

"[The BJP's] main campaign point during the elections was that they will bring back the black money within a specific time frame: within 100 days. Whatever steps the government is taking to bring back the black money, we support it. We also have no objection against the Black Money Bill in the Rajya Sabha. But we know for certain that they have no acted to bring it back. They are not sincere on the issue," Congress leader PC Chacko told ANI.

The Black Money Bill, which provides for penalty and tax up to 120 percent along with criminal prosecution for those who have parked black money abroad, was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who moved the bill in the Lok Sabha, asked the opposition not to develop 'cold feet' in supporting the legislation.

Jaitley also rejected the opposition demand to refer it to the Standing Committee. The minister said that a delay in enacting the legislation would provide opportunity to offenders to transfer unaccounted overseas wealth to other unknown destinations.

The bill provides for rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years for offenders.
