Do you know Mahatma Gandhi's views on cricket? Read Tripura school textbook

New Delhi: In a shocking attempt to indoctrinate students with a flawed vision of our country's history, the Left Front government in Tripura has removed Indian history from class 9 social science textbooks altogether.

As per a report in The Hindustan Times, the only Indian leader who finds a mention is Mahatma Gandhi. And, he finds mention not for his central role in India's freedom struggle but for his views on cricket!

Penned by Kalyan Choudhury, former head of history department in Kolkata’s MMC College, the book, which is part of the prescribed syllabus for students across the state, delves deep into the merits of the Russian and French revolutions.

As per HT, the book also has pages devoted to Nazism and the rise of Adolf Hitler besides information on the birth of cricket in England.

The book also describes in detail the Santhal rebellion and the fight over forest produce by tribals during the British rule.

While the Tripura Board of Secondary Education has reportedly denied that we were pressured by the Manik Sarkar government to prescribe the book, the BJP has alleged that the book is an attempt by the Left government “to paint everything in red” and brainwash students to follow Marx and communism.
