'Emergency' being witnessed for past 13 months: Congress

New Delhi: Congress on Monday used BJP patriarch LK Advani's remarks that an Emergency-like situation could emerge to hit out at the Narendra Modi dispensation alleging that an "Emergency" is being witnessed for the past 13 months in the country.

"Whatever Advaniji has said...The arrow has hit the target. Without approval of the Cabinet and assent of the President, the country is witnessing an Emergency in the past 13 months," Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha told reporters.

He said this when asked to comment on Advani's concerns that "forces that can crush democracy are stronger" now and that Emergency-like situation could emerge.

Asked whether the Congress would apologise to the nation for imposing internal Emergency 40 years ago, Azad said that Indira Gandhi had said at that time that never such a situation will be repeated.

"Congress will never bring it again," he remarked.

Advani in an interview last week had said, "Forces that can crush democracy are stronger... I don't have the confidence it (Emergency) cannot happen again".
