IIT-Madras students' group violated guidelines: Official

Chennai: As the row over derecognition of a students' body by the IIT-Madras management heated up on Friday, the authorities defended their action by saying that the association had violated the guidelines.

K Ramamurthy, academic in-charge at IIT, told reporters that while several student bodies are working at the institute, “it is expected that student bodies adhere to the laid-down guidelines that were agreed to by all of them”.

“While we don’t curtail freedom of expression but guidelines have to be adhered to,” Ramamurthy said.

“This group did not work according to the guidelines issued by the represented body,” he added, referring to the derecognised Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle (APSC).

The official refuted claims that the management was not willing to listen to the students' point of view and stated, “The Dean has asked the group to present their stand. When the board of students meets, the group will be given the chance to do so.”

"Right now vacation period is on. When they (students) come back, then the student bodies and administration will meet and discussion will be held," Ramamurthy said.
