Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday slammed senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid for defending imposition of Emergency in 1975, terming as "shameful" his remarks in this respect.

Indore: Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday slammed senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid for defending imposition of Emergency in 1975, terming as "shameful" his remarks in this respect.

"Salman Khurshid's statement reflects that Congress continues to justify the Emergency. It is highly shameful and we strongly condemn it," he said.

"Congress leader's (Khurshid's) mind was corrupted after Congress lost power," Javadekar told reporters.

He said Congress must apologise to the nation for the Emergency as it "disrespected" India's freedom struggle.

People never accepted the Emergency and imposing it was like "strangulating" the freedom which was earned after a long struggle, he said.

Khurshid had yesterday said that there was no need for Congress to apologise for imposition of Emergency in 1975 as people realised the decision was right and voted Indira Gandhi back to power.
