Markandey Katju lambasts Umar Khalid over Burhan Wani, Azadi for Kashmir demand – Know what he said

New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju, known for making controversial comments, has taken on slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani and Jawaharlal Nehru University student Umar Khalid.

The ex-chairman of Press Council of India put three questions to Umar, who was arrested on sedition charges for allegedly raising pro-Afzal Guru slogans in the JNU campus on February 9.

Katju's reaction came after Khalid praised Burhan Wani and compared him to Che Guevara.

The former top court judge raised questions on Khalid, Wani and separatists demand of 'Azad Kashmir' saying no one discusses how standard of living of Kashmiris can be raised.

He questioned Khalid on the ideology of Wani saying, “Was it Islamic fundamentalism. And does Umar Khalid agree with that?”

The JNU student, who is out on bail in a sedition case, recently kicked off another controversy by comparing the Hizbul Mujahideen commander who was gunned down earlier this week, with revolutionary Che Guevara.

"I don’t care if I fall as long as someone else picks up my gun and keeps on shooting. These were the words of Che Guevara, but could have just been Burhan Wani’s too," he said in a facebook post which he removed hours later.

He praised Wani for his bravery and said, "Burhan wasn’t scared of death, he was scared of a life lived in subjugation. He detested it. He lived a free man, died a free man .....".
