New Delhi: Why do judges break the nib of their pen in court room after giving a death sentence to a convict. This question has puzzled people for years.
But now several hypothesis were being put forwarded for this ritual that may us help solve this puzzle.
According to one theory, the judge breaks the nib of his pen because he doesn't want it to be used again for another judgment.
The very act of giving the death sentence, or taking the life of someone, is considered so “unholy” that the pen automatically becomes sullied.
Hence, the pen is destroyed.
Another theory being the pen is destroyed so that one one in his court, including himself, could question his verdict.
Once it's is pronounced it is considered final and no one can question it. Only a superior court has the power to override it.
According to one another theory, the judge breaks his pen out of guilt. The power of taking another person's life only rests on God but being a human being he is only carrying out his official duty that is bound by rules.
Therefore, by breaking the pen, he declares that he is only carrying out his official obligation.
