New Delhi: In a major development, December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape case convict, Vinay Sharma on Thursday attempted suicide in Tihar Jail.
The Nirbhaya gang-rape convict was admitted to hospital by the prison authorities.
The 23-year-old paramedic dubbed Nirbhaya (meaning fearless), was brutally assaulted and gang-raped by six persons in a moving bus in south Delhi and thrown out of the vehicle with her male friend on the night of December 16, 2012. She had died in a Singapore hospital on December 29.
The death sentence to four of the six rapists has been stayed by the Supreme Court following an appeal challenging the high court order upholding the same.
Of the six rapists, while one committed suicide, another convict, a juvenile at the time of the crime, was recently released after spending three years at a correctional home.
Besides Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Mukesh and Pawan Gupta are the other three convicts lodged in Tihar Jail. Ram Singh, committed suicide in the city's Tihar Jail three years ago
The juvenile was released from observation home in December last year.
