New Delhi: Just minutes before the Union Budget 2016 was tabled in the Lok Sabha yesterday by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had an expected meeting with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, which has become viral on the social media on Tuesday.
The unexpected meeting between the two leaders raised eyebrows, especially since Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi too had a 75-minute long meeting with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan just before the start of the Budget Session.
It later emerged that Sonia wanted to discuss a national conference of women legislators that the Speaker is organising in the first week of March.
The Congress chief has reportedly accepted the Speaker’s invitation to speak at the conference.
The conference will be inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee and is likely to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
