Afzal resolution: Cong to take part in discussion

Congress said its legislators would participate in the discussion and take a decision on the floor of the House.

Jammu: Remaining non-commital on the issue
proposed resolution favouring clemency for Afzal Guru to be
taken up by J&K Assembly during its session beginning tomorrow,
Congress today said its legislators would participate in the
discussion and take a decision on the floor of the House.

"Our legislators will go to the Assembly. And they
will participate in the discussions... what are listed" Jammu
and Kashmir Congress Chief Saif-Uddin-Soz said.

The decision on the issue would be taken by the
legislators, Soz said.

To a question whether Congress legislators would abstain
from discussion over the issue, he said, "They will
participate in discussions".
To another question whether they would support or
oppose it, he said, "It would be decided by legislators as the
matter concerns the Assembly".

On September 28, the resolution moved by Independent MLA
Sheikh Abdul Rashid seeking clemency for Guru, who is on death
row for his role in the attack on Parliament in December 2001,
would be discussed in the Assembly.
While PDP has voiced support to the motion, BJP has said
it will oppose it.

Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand had earlier stressed on
not raising any controversial issue to ensure a smooth
session.

"As a policy matter, PDP is against capital punishment. We
have supported mercy for Afzal Guru right from the day his
death sentence was announced," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti
had said.

Former union minister and suspended BJP MLA Chaman Lal
Gupta had said the state legislative assembly does not have
powers to pass such a resolution.

The ruling NC has said the issue would be decided in the
legislature party meeting.
