Jammu: A Congress team on Wednesday reached out to the people affected by incessant rainfall and flood-like condition in Srinagar and asked the Mufti Mohammed Sayeed government that the situation must not be allowed to go "out of control".

Led by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President, Gulam Ahmed Mir, a team including MLAs reached out to the flood affected people in various areas of Srinagar city today.

The Congress members visited Indra Nagar, Bemina Hamdania Colony, Gousia Colony, HMT and other areas in Srinagar city to meet the affected people.

The committee took stock of the prevailing situation arising due to incessant rain and the problems being faced by the people in Srinagar district and elsewhere in the Valley due to threat of floods.

Reminding the government of the havoc caused by the flood last year, Mir said that the situation is alarming and it must not be allowed to go "out of control".

"Due to incessant rain and landslide at Laden, we lost 16 precious lives... If the administration would have been alert and cautious enough they (deceased) would have been saved by shifting them to safer places early.

The JKPCC chief said, "Congress will assist the administration in rescue and rehabilitation of the people as the party is fully committed for their well-being in all the three regions of the state".

The party is monitoring the situation very closely and have asked the cadres to help the people and remain vigilant as MeT Department has predicted more rain in coming days, he said.

He also emphasised on the need for long term measures to be undertaken on a war footing basis in future for the safety of the people such as strong embankment and dredging of the nullahs, streams and river Jhelum in particular.

He said the flood control department must be geared up for undertaking these measures and that the government should also ensure dewatering of water logged areas in Srinagar and other districts .

While expressing serious concern over the loss to crops and orchards in the Valley, he impressed upon the government to make an assessment of the loss and provide compensation to affected farmers.
