J&K: 1 killed in militant attack on police station

One person was killed in crossfire during a cordon and search operation launched by security forces.

Srinagar: One person was killed in crossfire
during a cordon and search operation launched by security
forces soon after militants attacked a police station on Saturday in
Sopore town in Baramulla district in which two policemen and
three civilians were injured.
IGP SM Sahni said the victim killed in the crossfire
has been identified as Mehrajuddin Hajam, a resident of Hajim
in Bandipora and working at a shop in Sopore town.

Earlier, the police had said that the man killed during
the operation was a militant.

The police however said they were verifying whether
Hajam was involved in any militant activity or not.
Militants hurled grenades at the police station in
Sopore and then opened fire around 11:30 am in an attempt to
flee from the area, the police said.

Two policemen and three civilians were injured in the
incident, they said.

Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a
search operation as they suspect another militant is holed up
in the area.

Sopore, considered a hotbed of militancy, has witnessed
many attacks by ultras last year.
