Leh (JK): Remote Ladakh will not only be
made self-sufficient in the power sector but also export it to
other regions of Jammu and Kashmir, state Chief Minister Omar
Abdullah said here on Tuesday.
"The state government will harness the hydro and
non-conventional energy resources of Ladakh to its optimum
and provide clean energy to the region, reducing the usage of
diesel and kerosene in the area," the chief minister said.
He also directed the concerned authorities to ensure that
all the new initiatives being taken up for harnessing
non-conventional energy, should be financially sustainable
stand alone models, so that maximum benefit could reach those
living below the poverty line.
Omar along with the Union Minister for New and Renewable
Energy Farooq Abdullah reviewed the Rs 473 crore Ladakh
Renewable Energy Project slated to be completed by 2013.
He also inspected the 45 MW Nemo Bazgo Hydro Electric
Project being constructed under the Prime Minister`s
Reconstruction Programme.
On the commissioning of the Rs 950 crore Srinagar-Leh
Transmission Line approved by the Prime Minister recently, he
said "It will cater to the winter requirement of Ladakh region
as well, thereby mitigating the region`s power shortage."
Omar is currently on a visit to Ladakh to review various
development projects and the public service delivery system in
the region.
