PDP to contest 2 Rajya Sabha seats

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said it will contest two of the four Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir where polls will be held on February 7.

Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said it will contest two of the four Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir where polls will be held on February 7.

The PDP has decided to field Nazir Ahmad Laway and Fayaz Ahmad Mir for the two seats, party chief spokesman Naeem Akhtar said.

Laway and Mir both unsuccessfully contested the recent Assembly elections in the state from Kulgam and Kupwara Assembly segments respectively and lost by narrow margins. While Laway lost by 334 votes, Mir fell short by 151 votes.

Akhtar said the decision was taken by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti after consulting senior leaders of the party.

"Laway and Mir are young and energetic workers of the party who have struggled hard to promote the party's interests and agenda," he added.
