Jammu: A police officer was injured after being stabbed allegedly by some Sikh youth protesting against removal of posters of Sikh militant leader late Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, killed during operation Bluestar.
Sub-inspector Arun Kumar was critically wounded after he was attacked with a sharp edged weapon by some Sikh youth, police said, adding he has received several stitches and is admitted to GMC hospital with two other policemen.
Some members of Sikh community representing a particular organisation had put up posters of Bhindranwale and some other militant leaders on Satwari-R S Pura road here ahead of a programme to pay tribute to him today, officials said.
Station House Officer (SHO) of Satwari Police Station removed the poster, triggering protests from Sikh youths, who came on road and blocked traffic.
The protests soon spread to other areas and clashes were reported between police and protesters. Three policemen were injured including the sub inspector.
Protests are continuing as the agitators are demanding suspension of the SHO for removal of the posters.
The Deputy Commissioner Jammu Simrandeep Singh and police officers have rushed to the spot and are trying to pacify the protesters.
"Negotiations are being held between IGP Jammu and sikh youths in Gandhinagar Gurdawara. We hope to resolve the issue", the DC said.
