Two killed in firing in Srinagar, curfew continues

Violence Tuesday erupted in Srinagar and Budgam districts of the Kashmir Valley.

Srinagar: Two persons were today killed
and five others injured in clashes with security forces who
opened fire in Srinagar and Budgam districts of Kashmir
Valley.

A stone-pelter identified as Anis Khurshid was killed
when security forced opened fire to disperse protestors in
Eidgah area here, police said.

Defying curfew, residents of Qamarwari in Srinagar
earlier in the day took to the streets and held
demonstrations. When the security forces deployed in the area
asked them to disperse, they refused, they said.

Security forces then opened fire, killing 25-year-old
Mehraj Ahmed Lone and injuring three others.

In Budgam, locals held demonstrations and refused to
disperse following which security forces opened fire.

Two persons were injured in the firing and have been
hospitalised, police said.

Protests also spread to Jammu region`s Ramban, Doda
and Kishtwar districts as people held anti-government
demonstrations and blocked Jammu-Srinagar National Highway
over deaths in firing by security forces in the Valley.

A group of people gathered on the highway at Banihal
and held demonstrations, official sources said.

They blocked the highway and pelted stones on a few
vehicles disrupting traffic. As a result of the blockade, over
1500 were stranded at various places on the highway.

The demonstrations were also held in Kishtwar and
Bhaderwah towns of Kishtwar and Doda districts.

There was also a shut down in three towns of Kishtwar,
Bhaderwah and Banihal of Jammu region in support of Kashmiri
protestors.
