Ranchi: Campaigning for the fifth and final
phase of Jharkhand elections on December 18 ended on Wednesday.
A total of 290 candidates, including 23 women, are
contesting 16 seats of the 81-member Jharkhand assembly in the
final phase, Election Commission officials said here.
Polling for Barkatha, listed for the second phase on
December 2, was rescheduled for the last phase after BJP
candidate Chittaranjan Yadav died. The party nominated Yadav`s
son Amit for the seat.
Union Ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad, Sriprakash Jaiswal,
Subodh Kant Sahay, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar
Abdullah, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda and
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan were among the
heavyweights who pitched in for Congress.
BJP leaders Rajanth Singh, Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj,
Arun Jaitley, Shatrughan Sinha, Uttarakhand Chief Minister
Ramesh Pokhrial and JD(U) president Sharad Yadav campaigned
for NDA candidates.
