New Delhi: In the wake of the government
considering creation of Telangana state, an organisation
working for the cause of Maithils today demanded statehood for
Mithila region spread over parts of Bihar and Jharkhand.

The Antarrashtriya Maithili Parishad (AMP), the body
spearheading a campaign for Mithila state, said creation of a
separate state would accelerate the socio-economic development
of the Mithila region.

In a press statement, AMP spokesperson Dhanakar Thakur
said the per capita income of the region was 70 per cent of
the national average in 1950. It of late slipped to less than
20 per cent.

Nearly 9.42 lakh hectare of agricultural land of the
region is trapped in water logging, affecting the economy of
the people. Creation of a separate Mithila state is the
aspiration of over five crore people of the region and it
would also stop migration from the region to big cities, he
said in the statement.

The region spreads over 66,000 sq km in Bihar and
Jharkhand.
