Youth critical after self-immolation attempt over Cauvery water issue

A 25-year-old youth who attempted self-immolation here on Thursday protesting against Karnataka's attitude towards sharing of Cauvery river water is in critical condition, police said.

Chennai: A 25-year-old youth who attempted self-immolation here on Thursday protesting against Karnataka's attitude towards sharing of Cauvery river water is in critical condition, police said.

The youth, identified as Vignesh, is a member of Naam Tamizhar Katchi founded by film director Seeman.

The party was holding a rally here to protect Tamil Nadu's rights over Cauvery river water.

Suddenly Vignesh poured kerosene on himself and set fire. Though the fire was doused by others, he suffered severe burn injuries and was taken to a government hospital.
