New Delhi: The union cabinet Wednesday approved the constitution of a supervisory committee on the Mullaperiyar Dam to look into the safety aspect of the proposed increase in height of the over 100-year-old structure.

"The three-member Supervisory Committee will look into the issues about the safety of the dam restoration of FRL (full reservoir level) to 142 feet," an official statement said.

The decision follows a Supreme Court judgment asking for formation of a committee to oversee the issue, which has become the bone of contention between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

According to sources from water resources ministry, the three-member committee will have a member each from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and an official from the Central Water Commission.
