New Delhi: The CBSE on Thursday sought a report
from a Kerala school over reports that it issued a transfer
certificate to a Muslim student because she was wearing a
headscarf.
The school board has written to the Believers Church
English Medium School at Gurupuram Avalookkunnu in Alappuzha
district, seeking its immediate comment on the issue, a HRD
ministry official said.
The student was about to be promoted to class X and
was allegedly issued a transfer certificate as she was wearing
a headscarf.
The board said that such action is a violation of the
affiliation Bye-Laws of CBSE. Before taking further action,
the CBSE has directed the school to fax its comments on the
issue immediately.
The issue assume significance as it came a few days
after the CBSE issued a general guidelines to all its
affiliated schools asking them to treat students
sympathetically.
The guideline was issued in January after it came to
light that a Chandigarh-based school had expelled Ruchika
Girhotra, who allegedly committed suicide after being molested
by former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore. There are allegations
that the school expelled her under pressure from Rathore.
However, the school has denied the charges.
