Thiruvananthapuram: With a view to address
the growing transport problem in the state capital, the Kerala
cabinet on Wednesday entrusted National Transportation Planning and
Research Centre with the task of conducting a feasibility
study to introduce a 28-km monorail project for the city.
The proposal is to have a monorail system between
Kazhakoottam, the IT hub of the state and Balaramapuram in the
outskirts of the state capital.
"The Centre has been asked to prepare a feasibility
study and submit it to the government as soon as possible,"
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after a cabinet
meeting.
Monorail is a rail-based transportation system based on
a single rail, which acts as its sole support and guide way.
The rail would be erected on a track on medians that
divide the main roads, according to experts.
On the Metro Transport Project in Kochi, Chandy said a
team of government officials, including state Planning Board
Vice-Chairman K M Chandrasekhar would meet central government
officials to hold discussions about the project.
