New Delhi: Minister of State for Human Resources and Development (HRD) Shashi Tharoor has come out in support of the Kerala Police, who have booked 111 Internet users for posting and sharing 'defamatory' comments on Facebook against Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien in the Suryanelli gang-rape case.

Kerala Mahila Congress leader Bindu Krishna had filed a complaint with the police, following which the Kerala Police Cyber Cell registered the case against 111 people. Krishna had claimed that she was also the target of several of those comments.

Defending Kurien and the police, Tharoor said it was a case of defamation.

The RS Deputy Chairman is not an accused in the Suryanelli rape case but was named by a survivor in a police complaint. No FIR has been registered against him so far.

Krishna said she had submitted the complaint to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who forwarded it to the cyber cell for investigation.

Krishna said she was only stating the party stand on Kurien issue, but the comments that appeared in the social media were "highly defamatory" with a view to "tarnish" her image as a woman.

"As per the information available so far, the comments were posted from a fake ID and police were trying to trace their origin. Police are in contact with Facebook authorities," Krishna said.

The comments were noticed on February 4 and by then itself more 140 people were found to have shared them, she said.

Kurien was named by the Suryanelli victim as one of those who had sexually assaulted her in 1996. The Supreme Court had exonerated the Congress leader of the charges.

The victim recently wrote to her advocate seeking to explore the possibility of filing a review plea in the Supreme Court for a fresh probe against Kurien, triggering calls for his resignation.

Kurien has maintained that he had been cleared of the charges by the apex court.

Justice - Abu dhabi
When will this poor girl get any justice? Its heart rending to hear this girl`s story. She has been abandoned by the justice system, ostracised by the society, terrorised and defamed beyond any human imagination. Why cant this man stand for tial, why is the government protecting people like him and prosecuting people who are supporting the girl on facebook. People have the right to express their indignation of their Facebook pagess that too against sunch injustice the girl has suffered. Its time political leaders are brought to court for the crimes they cmmit. may God grant the girl justice!

Mr Tharoor’s is trying to legitimate the entire criminal act of Mr. Kurien who is named and is under trail in worst act of shame by supporting the defamation case filed against the man masses. Instead of justifying Mr. Kurien‘s shameful who is holding one of the most recognizable &responsible position in the house of democracy congress leaders must ask and guide him to resign from the position. This is mere act of ignorance of heinous crime against woman.

Kerala Mahila Congress My God? Whom they r serving? Would they and other Congress regiment would have supported Kurian had he belonged to BJP? We do not expect Mr.Taroor and mahila Congress to react on party lines in a case pertaining to harassment of Women. There are other civilised ways to handle this issue.

It is infact defamation to the country a person who is accused of rape is heading the country`s Rajya sabha. A review petition can be filed any time in the supreme court so accused still remain an accused only until the victim testifies him as not accused. It is shameful for Shashi Tharoor who has worked for UN is backing such people...... I dont know about what sort defamatory language they have used..... if they have used any filthy language then should restrain from using such language
