Bhopal: A scientist, who inspected a
contaminated solution in the Union Carbide factory after the
1984 gas leak tragedy, today deposed before a court saying
mixing of water in a tank had let to toxic releases.

Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) Research Centre
scientist A B Parleker said he had inspected the tank
containing Methyl Iso-Cyanate (MIC) several times between
December 1984 and March 1985 and even took samples in 1986.

Parlekar in his statement to Chief Judicial Magistrate
(CJM) M P Tiwari, said a chemical reaction took place after
water got mixed in the tank. His findings revealed that toxic
release occurred after water was mixed with MIC.

Poisonous gas release from now defunct UCIL Bhopal on
the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984 had left hundreds
of people dead and maimed.

The CJM court has examined 178 prosecution witnesses
besides the accused, barring former Chairman of Union Carbide
Corporation, United States, Warren Anderson in the trial.

Parleker was the fifth defence witness to depose.
