BMC issues notice to Taj, Oberoi about barricades

Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) have sent notices to Taj and Oberoi Hotels for barricading roads citing security reasons, without obtaining necessary permission.

Mumbai: Municipal Corporation of Greater
Mumbai (MCGM) have sent notices to Taj and Oberoi Hotels for
barricading roads citing security reasons, without obtaining
necessary permission.

"We have issued show cause notices to both the hotels
- Taj and Oberoi, asking them to explain why barricades have
been put outside the hotels. We are still awaiting a reply
from them," Additional Municipal Commissioner A K Singh said
here.

Following the dastardly 26/11 terror attack, both Taj
and Oberoi Hotels had installed barricades for security
reasons. The barricades were put up even while renovation of
these hotels was underway.

Even when the work was completed some time ago barricades
were still not removed.

"We understand that they might be doing so for security
reasons. We know security cannot be compromised but it cannot
be done by grabbing the public road. They need to follow a
proper procedure. They need to take permission either from
traffic or police department," Singh said.

The civic body has asked both the five star hotels to
reply to the notice or else it will remove barricades, Deputy
Municipal Commissioner Milind Sawant, said, adding, "If Taj
and Oberoi fail to reply to the notice within 48 hours we will
assume they have not taken the permission and remove the
barricades."
