Mumbai: The Centre is contemplating amending
the Atomic Energy Act and strengthening the regulatory regime
as India is becoming a major player in global nuclear energy
arena, Minister of State in Prime Minister`s Office Prithviraj
Chavan said on Friday.
"We are contemplating amending of Atomic Energy Act 1962
and also contemplating strengthening of atomic regulatory
regime either through a new legislation or through amendments
in the (existing) Act as India is becoming a major player,"
Chavan said addressing the scientists and engineers of the
Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) at the 101st birth
anniversary of Homi J Bhabha here.
He said India has achieved a position in the global scene
without compromising the basic principles of not signing
unequal treaties and not accepting obligations of a system
that is unequal and revolves around P-5 countries of UN
Security Council.
"All this was possible in a technology control regime
only with the full support of the scientific community and
their support to the Indian political system," he said lauding
the DAE scientists.
Chavan, who is also the Minister of State for Science and
Technology, said despite several international bilateral civil
nuclear agreements, India`s three-stage programme would not be
compromised.
