Mumbai: A 30-year-old police constable
posted at the American Consulate here was killed on Monday after
two bullets from his service weapon pierced through his skull,
police said.

The incident took place early this morning behind the
Consulate in Breach Candy area in South Mumbai, where he was
posted, police said.

It was not, however, clear if it was a suicide, police
added.

"Constable Deepak Vitkare was posted at the rear of
the Consulate building. We are yet to ascertain whether it was
a suicide or a case of accidental firing," Joint Police
Commissioner (Law and Order) Rajneesh Seth said.

According to sources, policemen heard a sound of
bullets at the Consulate premises. They looked around and
found Vitkare with serious injuries in his skull.

"When the incident occurred, no other cop was near
him. Hence the investigations are being conducted to ascertain
if it was a case of suicide by Gamdevi Police Station. Two
bullets were fired from his carbine firearm," said Deputy
Police Commissioner Anil Kumbhare.

Vitkare, attached with Local Arms wing of Tardeo and
resident of police residential quarters at Mahim, was
immediately taken to the nearby Breach Candy hospital where he
was declared dead, Kumbhare added.
