Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Thursday
announced Rs 14 crore compensation for the victims of cyclone
Phyan, which has claimed 28 lives in the state.

"Altogether 28 people are dead and 34 fishermen are
missing from Konkan region," Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan
Bhujbal told reporters after a state cabinet meeting here.
The government has announced Rs 14 crore compensation for
the cyclone victims. The amount may increase after a detailed
report of property destruction is received, Principal
Secretary for Relief and Rehabilitation Ramesh Kumar said.

The government has also relaxed norms for compensation
for missing persons. Now, they will be declared dead after two
months instead of seven years, Bhujbal said. Families of each
of the victim would get compensation of Rs two lakh, he said.

About 8,000 fishing nets were found torn due to the
cyclone. The government has decided to give up to Rs 10,000
for small nets and up to Rs 25,000 for the bigger ones,
Bhujbal said.

The cyclone damaged 143 small boats and 12 big trawlers.
Compensation of up to Rs 60,000 would be given for small boats
and Rs two lakh for the trawlers, he said.
On Opposition`s allegation that an alert about the
cyclone was not issued on time to the fishermen, Bhujbal said
an inquiry would be conducted into the matter.

The government has also decided to provide 20 kg food
grain and 20 litre kerosene to each family displaced by
the cyclone in coastal Konkan, Kumar said.
