A 56-year-old debt-ridden farmer from Wada taluka here committed suicide after being unable to repay his crop loan, police said Monday.

Palghar: A 56-year-old debt-ridden farmer from Wada taluka here committed suicide after being unable to repay his crop loan, police said Monday.

The farmer, identified as Laxman Bapu Thackeray from Einshet village took the extreme step yesterday by hanging himself from the ceiling in his house, PI Sanjay Hazare of Wada police station told PTI.

Bapu could not repay his loan of Rs 6 lakh from the Seva Sahakari Society due to crop failure this season.

Also, the MSEB had slapped a notice for Rs 55,000 on him for power dues followed which he was forced to shut down his poultry farm.
