Mumbai `pani puri` row lands BJP leader in trouble

A girl had captured on camera a paani puri vendor urinating in a utensil, lodged a complaint.

Mumbai: BJP president of Mumbai unit Raj
Purohit may come in for trouble for his remarks criticising a
girl, whose sting video of a `paani puri` vendor apparently
urinating into a jug kept on his handcart, recently created a
stir.

A meeting of BJP state executives organised on Monday
here would decide the political fate of Purohit in the
backdrop of the controversy, a source from BJP today said.

"The meeting was convened to discuss ensuing civic body
polls but the controversy would be discussed. The state
in-charge Venkaiah Naidu would address the meeting," a senior
BJP leader said.

Even women wing of BJP has taken strong objection against
the comment and demanded Purohit`s resignation to the party
leaders, the source said.

Purohit had taken charge of the city president last
year in September. He was an MLA from South Mumbai but lost
the Assembly polls in 2009. There were lot of opposition for
his appointment as the president.

A 59-year-old paani puri vendor in Thane was detained
last month for allegedly peeing into a small utensil that he
used to serve his customers, after Ankita Rane, the 19-year
old student, captured the act on camera from a nearby balcony.

The controversy started after Purohit criticised Ankita
in a public meeting saying "no Indian woman, not even women in
red light areas will watch such a thing."

MNS flayed Purohit for the remarks and termed them
`vulgar`. A police case has been registered against him by
Ankita at Azad Maidan police station.
