Union Home Ministry made party in PIL over Rane`s statement

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court Thursday directed
that Union Home Ministry be made a party to the PIL over
Maharashtra Minister Narayan Rane`s statement on alleged nexus
between terrorists and politicians soon after Mumbai attacks
last year.

A division bench comprising justices J N Patel and
Amjed Sayed ruled that since N N Vohra committee submitted its
report on `criminalisation of politics` to the Centre, the
Centre should be made a party to the case.

The PIL filed by Shiv Sena worker Purushottam Barde had
sought inquiry into Rane`s allegation that some of the state
politicians helped terrorists who attacked Mumbai on November
26 last year.
Rane made the charges soon after the attack, but later in
High Court he took the stand that he was merely referring to
Vohra Committee report submitted in 1993 on criminalisation of
politics and was not talking about any individuals.

During last hearing, the court had asked the state on the
actions taken by it on the basis of the Vohra report.

Government pleader Aruna Pai-Kamat today told the court
that the report was submitted to the Centre, and the Centre
had formed another committee for its implementation.

"State has no role in this," she argued.

The court then asked the petitioner to make Union Home
Ministry a party, adjourning hearing for six weeks.
